The role
Food Runners support event service by moving plated food from kitchen to pass to tables at pace and to plan. The role is sometimes called Back Waiter or Banqueting Runner. It is the foundational event service role — less customer interaction than Event Waiters, more focus on pace, accuracy, and supporting the floor team to deliver service on time.
Who it suits
The role suits workers who are physically fit, comfortable working at pace, and capable of holding a service plan in mind through a busy event. It is well-suited to those starting out in event hospitality, and to those building experience toward Event Waiter and senior event service roles.
A typical shift
Four to ten hours depending on the event. The shift begins with the worker arriving uniform-ready and taking a briefing on the event, the running order, the menu, allergens, and the table plan. Mise-en-place and pre-service support follow, then runners move plated food from the kitchen pass to the floor team in line with the captain's calls. Clearing, side work, and breakdown follow the event close.
Requirements & expectations
- Hospitality experience preferred — restaurant, banqueting, or event service
- Allergen awareness training — Natasha’s Law standard
- Right to work in the UK
- Black-tie or all-black uniform standard — workers arrive presentation-ready
- Physically fit and comfortable on their feet for long shifts at pace
- Composed under pressure and capable of working to a service plan
- Reliable and team-oriented — runners support the rest of the floor team
Skills you’ll gain

Where you could work
Conifer staffs Food Runners across hotel banqueting halls, livery halls and historic venues, conference centres, corporate HQs, and private members' clubs. Workers are briefed in detail on the event, the running order, and the standards expected before arriving on site.
